Things to see and do in Voss, Norway
upd 30 January 2024
Voss is a popular city in Norway for sport activities that often calles an outdoor sports hub. For example, a great ski resort, several hiking trails, kayaking, paragliding and more. It’s also not far from Bergen (100 km), and the climate here is pretty mild all the year.
Things to see
The main attraction of the city is the Voss Church. It was built in the 13th century and is one of the oldest churches in Scandinavia. The style of this medieval stone church can be describes as early Gothic, which is also very rare for Norway.
The old wooden town was destroyed during the bombings in April 1940. German troops were met with resistance, which led to death of civilians and a desctruction of the most buildings. Voss remained occupied until the end of war.
There are two big streets in Voss where all the restaurants, cafes, shops and supermarkets can be found. But the main attraction of Voss is nature.
A bit outside of the city there is a Voss Folkemuseum – a historical museum in old wooden buildings that shows how people used to live in the 1800s.
Things to do
Unlike Bergen, Voss has a mild climate with far less rain. So all the year the city attracts many people who love outdoor activities. In winter there 14 ski lifts and several ski slopes. In summer it is a center of rafting and kayaking. And don’t forget hiking in the mountains – the itinerary can be found in a local tourist center. In addition, the most beautiful fjords are nearby: Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord.
As for extreme sprots, you can try skydiving or paragliding.
You can book several hiking tours in advance: a walk to a biggest waterfall in Norway – Tvindefossen, or a walk around Bordalsgjelet Gorge or a ride in a Voss Gondol.
Hot to get there
The closest big city to Voss is Bergen (100 km). You can plan your trip which would also include beautiful norwegian fjords: Sognefjord and Hardangerfjorden. The easiest way to travel is by car.
There is also a train Begen-Voss, a ticket costs around 200 NOK.
Where to stay
For such a small city Voss has suprisingly many good hotels. Of course, the place is pretty popular during vacations, so you should book your best option in advance.
The origin of the famous VOSS water is actually not in Voss, but the village of Vatnestrøm in Iveland municipality, located more than 400 kilometers from Voss. Most likely, the name of Vatnestrøm or Iveland sounded not fancy enough for a premium water brand, so name of Voss was chosen with no connection to the original place.
